The crossbow and bowhunting rules to know, in plain English

Hunting rules change by state and by year, and the official guides can be hard to read. This page summarizes what beginners most often ask about, in plain English.

Most states require hunter education before your first license. Then you’ll need to understand how archery seasons work and the rules for your state, like Washington, Pennsylvania or Texas.

Hunting with a crossbow? Each state decides who can use one and in which season. Start with your state: Texas, New York, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Florida or Maine.

If you’re traveling, check the rules for transporting a bow too. None of this is legal advice; always confirm with your state agency.

Questions I get a lot

Short answers to what beginners ask me about laws & regulations.

No. Licenses are for hunting. Target archery at a range or on private land usually needs no permit.

Many states set one, often 35–45 lb for big game. Check your state regulations.

Where do I find my state’s official rules?

Your state wildlife or fish and game agency publishes them each year, usually as a free PDF.

Can I shoot a bow in my backyard?

It depends on local rules. Many towns allow it with a safe backstop; some don’t. Check your city or county code.

Do rules change every year?

Often, yes. Read the current regulations guide before every season.

Can I travel with my bow across state lines?

Usually, if it’s cased and broadheads are secured. Check both states’ rules.
